The Annual Scientific Meeting of the Astronomical Society of Australia (ASA) for 2018 will be held at Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne, between 25-29 June.
As the SkyMapper and the Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP) move towards full science operations, along with the establishment of large-scale theory data initiatives such as the Theoretical Astrophysical Observatory, OzGrav, and the ASTRO-3D Data Intensive Astronomy program, one of the meeting themes will be focusing on the challenges of Astronomy in the Petascale Data Era.
The membership of Australia in the European Southern Observatory (ESO) is one of the biggest restructuring of the Australian astronomy landscape in the last few decades. The other major theme of the 2018 ASA will be Astronomy in the Era of ESO. The incentive is to promote a broader knowledge of ESO facilities and to engage ESO connections with optical, radio, multi-messenger and theoretical astronomers in Australia.
