Presenting your science (9am – 10:30am)
Find out how to present your research quickly and clearly to anyone. In this workshop, you’ll hear about what makes a good pitch, you’ll write one, present it and get feedback.
All researchers need to be able to get to the point of what it is they do and what problem they are investigating and solving. Whether that’s for your local MP, a potential benefactor, patient advocate group or business.
We ask that you come along for the day with a few bullet points about your work. Think about the last time you wrote a plain English summary at the front of a grant application or how you explain your work to a family member. Then we’ll help you refine and polish your story.
This workshop will be facilitated by Niall Byrne from Science in Public, a science communication business that helps researchers get their work into the public space.
Building your profile (11-12 noon)
We will explore why you need visibility for yourself and your research, and how you achieve it. In this forum, we’ll walk through:
- ways you might build and develop a personal profile;
- who your communities of interest are;
- and the merits of websites, Twitter accounts, Facebook profiles, ResearchGate, SciMex and other platforms.
This workshop will be facilitated by Niall Byrne from Science in Public.

Conference Dinner – Under the Sea Theme Canapes and drinks in foyer. 2-course alternative serves of mains and dessert, plus keynote in Pleides Room (next door to Sirius room) Special guest/keynote speaker – Marji Puotinen, Australian Institute of Marine Science. Marji’s work in Geographic Information Systems specialises in applying advanced spatial technologies to the geo-simulation of processes for which relative location is important, in particular, to address spatially complex ecological questions that require the development of automated spatial software tools. Within this broad context, a key focus is modeling the impacts of multiple stressors, particularly tropical cyclones, on the world’s coral reefs now and under future climates. |
