Western Australian Secondary Schools!

Want to engage your students in a fun STEM activity that uses research-grade equipment? Offered by ASTRO 3D in conjunction with ICRAR’s Outreach Program, the SPIRIT in schools program allows Western Australian students to get first-hand experience working with SPIRIT professional-grade remote internet telescopes. A brand new 1-metre telescope has just been added to the SPIRIT line up in 2021.

Our educational specialists work with teachers to allow students to access SPIRIT telescopes.  Access is free for all Western Australian secondary schools.

Working in groups, your students will learn how to take pictures of the night sky, process the images and use the data they collect over several observation sessions. Working with your teachers, our team can tailor the program to fit your students’ needs and capabilities, creating an experience that will push them without overwhelming them. This program’s outcome is to give students access to resources they would normally only find in a university setting and allow them to think and work like a scientist.

Resources required include:

  • access to internet-connected computers
  • approximately 6 lessons of class time (at least one week apart, but timing is flexible, and the program can be adapted over longer time periods or as a short taster).

The program can be offered as a mix of in-person engagement with astronomers, remote lessons via video connection and in-class group work led by classroom teachers with our support.
