Biography

Dr Amelia Fraser-McKelvie is an observational extragalactic astronomer and ESO Fellow. Her research focusses on galaxy evolution using large-scale optical integral field spectroscopic surveys, targeting stellar populations and kinematics. In particular, she is interested in galaxy morphology, aiming to understand why galaxies look the way they do. After my PhD at Monash University, I have worked at the University of Nottingham and the University of Western Australia as part of the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR). During my time as an astronomer, I've been a member of many large astronomical collaborations, and dealt with large astronomical data sets and supercomputers. Next, I am travelling to Munich to work at the headquarters of the European Southern Observatory (ESO), where I will be working on two ESO large programs that I have significant leadership roles in. I'm passionate about EDI initiatives in astronomy, having served on ICRAR's development, equity, and inclusivity committee for two years. I believe that everyone should have the opportunity to study science. Another passion of mine is communicating science to the public, and I frequently give public talks on all sorts of astronomy-based topics. I regularly volunteer my time at the Perth Observatory where I get to share the wonders of the night sky with the general public.
