Biography

Born in the Czech Republic and educated at Wadham College, Oxford and Manchester University in England, he adopted Australian nationality some 37 years ago. He became a Professor of Astronomy at the Mount Stromlo Observatory, now the Research School of Astronomy & Astrophysics at the Australian National University in 1994. Elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science in 1996, was Treasurer (2007-13) & Council Member of that body. He was President of Division VI of the International Astronomical Union (1997-2000).
