Biography

Rebecca is an optical engineer, working in astronomy on research-class optical telescopes at the Australian Astronomical Optics, Macquarie University. She has bachelor’s degrees in Photonic Engineering and International Development, and has recently completed a Master in Physics. Her astronomy work involves designing, building, testing, and commissioning complex optomechanical instrumentation for astronomical research. Rebecca is also the chair of the department’s Equity and Inclusion Committee, and a vocal advocate of equitable access to science and technology. Rebecca has volunteered with Engineers Without Borders as a member and leader in local chapters, and as a mentor and facilitator for Australian students on community-centred design study tours. She strongly believes that all people and communities should have equitable access to science and technology, and that technology development thrives when it is focused on appropriate technologies that are human-centred. Rebecca loves being active, and the outdoors, and enjoys rock climbing, canyoning, camping and hiking.
